The newly-renovated Town Hall in Maryport has been officially reopened by the Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, Councillor Mike Johnson.

Local people, as well as invited guests, had the chance to see the work for themselves today [Wednesday 2 November 2022] at an open door event.

The Town Hall is now also open for business again with an appointment system in place. This will allow members of the public to book a convenient time to see Allerdale Borough Council customer services officers about their housing benefit or council tax queries. Cumbria Police will also have a presence in the building and officers say it will embed them in the community. Maryport Town Council is also based there.

The £200,000 refurbishment has transformed the interior and exterior, preserving this historic building for the future. Disabled access has been improved and original features restored thanks to Maryport’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) initiative, which is funded by Historic England, Allerdale Borough Council and Sellafield Ltd.

As he reopened the building, Councillor Johnson said: “The Town Hall is not only a Maryport landmark – it’s a vital resource and an important part of our regeneration work in this town.”
