What does the Mayor do?
The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected by the Council at the Annual General Meeting each year in May. The Mayor is the first citizen of the Borough of Allerdale, and he or she Chairs the Council meetings during their year in office.
The role of the Mayor of Allerdale is to represent Allerdale Borough Council and the communities of the Borough. The Mayor's responsibilities include the following:
- To uphold, promote and interpret the Constitution
- To preside over meetings of the Council so that its business can be carried out efficiently
- To ensure that the Council meeting is a forum for the debate of matters of concern to the local community
- To promote public involvement in the Council's activities
- To attend civic and ceremonial functions within the Borough and the wider community
Invitations for the Mayor
The Mayor of Allerdale attends civic and ceremonial functions within the Borough and the wider community.
The Mayor of Allerdale welcomes invitations to attend events around the Borough. If you would like to invite the Mayor to attend your event please send a formal invitation, with details of the event to, the Mayor's secretary to mayoralty@allerdale.gov.uk.
If the Mayor is able to attend then you will receive a proforma asking for specific details of the event. This should be completed and returned at least ten days before the event so that the Mayor and his or her attendant has all the necessary details.
On some occasions it may not be possible for the Mayor to attend. Should this be the case, the Deputy Mayor will deputise for the Mayor, where possible.
How to address the Mayor of Allerdale
People often ask how should they address the Mayor of Allerdale and other local dignitaries. The full official title of the Mayor is 'The Worshipful the Mayor of Allerdale', but this title is only really used at very formal occasions, usually to introduce the Mayor in civic processions or when acknowledging the Mayor in a speech.
In correspondence or conversation, it is fine to address the Mayor as Mr Mayor or Madam Mayor, or simply by his or her name. This way of addressing the Mayor is similar for other borough Mayors too.
The Mayor of Allerdale is the Mayor of the whole Borough, but each of the main towns within the borough of Allerdale has its own Town Mayor, who is elected each year by the Town or Parish Council.
You can distinguish between Borough Mayors and Town Mayors, by addressing Town Mayors as Mr Town Mayor or Madam Town Mayor, or again, you may just want to refer to them by name.
